Easter Racket
So I feel I need to get something off my chest... what is the deal with the Easter Bunny? Have people gone mad? I am frustrated by the gap that seems to exist between the true meaning of Easter and all the commotion about the Easter Bunny. We had a dilemma this year about what to tell our kids about the Easter Bunny. It is not too far of a stretch to tie Santa in with the Christmas season as he gives presents to children just as the wise men gave to Jesus, but where does this Easter Bunny come from. What is his purpose or significance...I see none. Rather than tell our girls there is no Easter Bunny we simply told them he doesn't come to our house ("we asked him not to"). We did an egg hunt the day after Easter because we didn't want our children to be deprived, but I think next year we might do it weeks before or after so they can keep the tradition while associating it with the springtime instead of Easter. Anyone with me?

Oh Jen...we are totally with you on this. What is the Easter bunny all about anyway. It's cute in theory but, was it supposed to "lay" all of the Easter eggs? We colored eggs and passed out candy and hunted for plastic eggs (cause it was raining) all on Saturday. Saturday is the Easter "fun" day. Then on Sunday we didn't do any of the "fun" stuff although primary teachers still gave out treats. We should back up and say we had a FHE the Monday before telling, mostly Christian, what Easter was really about...Christ and the Resurrection. We were surprised he knew more about it than we thought. On Saturday, we really didn't mentioned "Easter Bunny" hardly at all. I know I talked with some other friends and we all grew up with the big Easter basket, Easter bunny big deal. It just goes back to the fact that most holidays are for children anyway...it's all about the candy. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, we hope you guys are doing well! Love ya, Matt & Lia
We do it all on Saturday too. It works for our family. We celebrate spring and all things bunnyish on Saturday. Then on sunday all of the silly stuff is out of the way, we can focus on Christ. As our kids get older we will probably do it earlier so we can focus on the Savior all week long.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who has always gotten a spring basket on the first day of spring instead of an Easter basket from the "Easter bunny."
ReplyDeleteMy parents never did the easter bunny thing and it has scarred me for life.
